Operation Tiger Stripe

I have been in a “home improvement” slump for a few weeks. I suppose if you ignore the shelves I bought in the beginning of August and the whole hot water heater debacle, I haven’t really devoted more than an hour of any day to actually making my home my home since June. Motivation quickly evaporated after I got the essentials completed. I have a room to game and watch movies, my kitchen was complete and my bedroom is 95% complete – what more do I need? I suppose if you exclude hallways, the dining room, a few closets, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, the back patio and the main storage closet…I don’t have anything left to do.

Hot Water

Last week, my Monday started off with a bang. I’m talking about a real barn burner. I hadn’t been at my desk at work for five minutes before I was greeted with a lovely phone call indicating that my hot water heater was leaking into the condo below mine. Talk about a case of the Monday’s.

I’m going to start this story with the negative and slowly work my way to the happy ending. So hang in there, I promise it will get better by the end.

This is Really Happening

I moved my media and the majority of my clothing to my condo last night. After a solid grocery run after work today, I suppose I should start living there, right? I wonder if the reality of what is happening will ever hit me. This is my home. It just sounds weird saying it. It looks weird typing it. But whatever adulthood is, I’m one step closer to achieving it.

Tool Time – Weekend Recap

And how did you spend your 3-day weekend? Did you make two trips to IKEA in 24 hours because you mistakenly selected the wrong color chairs to match your table? Did you finally receive a bed and appliances? Did you throw away enough cardboard for a fort of epic proportions? I’m guessing you didn’t get to ALL of those things this weekend. To be clear, I’m not bragging about any of this. I’m just trying paint a picture so when I say “I’m exhausted”, you know it’s well justified. There’s lot to get to this week on the home-front. Some posts will be more detailed than others, but to start off the work week, I’ll go macro instead of micro.

Tool Time – Two Coats or Three

Technically I do not have a hard move-out date, but I’m still shooting for the first weekend in June. Bedroom furniture and (hopefully) my appliances will be showing up Saturday. I’ve scheduled my heat pump replacement for Wednesday, thankfully my dad (who works from home on Wednesdays) will be able to help me out with logistics on that one. As I slowly countdown the days until I start living in my home my to-do list has to shift from things I want to do to things I have to do. The bathroom isn’t what I want it to be right now, but I need it to be functional right now and I’ll make it what I want in time. Baby steps. It’s all about baby steps.

Tool Time – The Little Things

This week has been a whirlwind of productivity. I have a couch that is comfy, I have a TV with about 5 HD channels, I have a ceiling fan in my bedroom. There’s a lot more that has been done, and of course there’s plenty left to keep doing. I think this week has taught me that it’s going to be ok. It’s going to be ok that 2 of these bedrooms will be empty and soulless for a little bit while I figure out what to do with them. It’s going to be ok that pretty much everything about my bathroom is hideous, but as long as the sink, toilet and shower work, I can deal with it (for now). And, it’s going to be ok that my appliances got delayed a week (without any prior notification) because after I’m finished putting my bed together next Saturday, I know that I’ll be able to test out the washer and dryer on my new bed sheets.

Tool Time – Pics or It Didn’t Happen

Short post today. I still have lots to get to. Lucky for you, a picture is worth 1000 words. So, I’m providing some of my favorite before and after pictures of the progress I’ve made to-date. There’s still a whole lot to get to, but I can comfortably say that 1. IKEA is awesome. B. This place almost resembles a home and III. This is freaking awesome. Appliances (Washer, Dryer, Oven, Microwave) arrive tomorrow (Friday) and my bed is coming next weekend. That should give me plenty of time to get the basic layout of my bedroom down. I know I’ll need at least 2 coats of that maroon-y color I picked out. But enough stalling, on to the show!
