Actual conversation with our server during dinner.
Me: Is this Diet? I’m kind of a stickler for that stuff.
Dayle: We both have diabetes, so
Server: Oh, I have diabetes too! I don’t think the line has changed, but you never know. Let me check on that for you.
Sever, returning with fresh soda: I double checked the lines and it’s definitely Diet Coke. Here’s a new one just in case.
Me: Thank you
Dayle: Thank you
Server, after we’ve gotten our food: I asked around and it sounds like we put in a new syrup box this morning, so the soda might be extra fresh. That might have been what you tasted.
Me: I’ve been battling some allergies too, so this was likely just an overreaction on my part, but I appreciate you checking.
Manager On Duty, as our food is being served: I just wanted you to know that we checked all of the lines to ensure our soda is accurate. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Me and Dayle: Thank you
I try not to make a big deal out of stuff like this. Sometimes severs get it wrong. Sometimes I mumble my drink request. It happens. And like I said, I don’t like being that customer that causes a scene over something that’s easily remedied. I suppose it’s a good thing I consume too much Diet Coke, in case a regular soda tries to sneak its way through my straw. I know there are plenty of bad things that could happen if I drank a full, unrecognized regular soda, but I didn’t. And the staff at ‘Matchbox’ was over-accomodating to my concerns.
The fact that our server also lives with diabetes was a welcome bonus. We’re everywhere!
That’s the way it’s supposed to be!! I had just the opposite experience at a convenience store – one that visibly and consistently supports JDRF, for that matter, that I almost felt bad for them. Glad to hear there are really people out there who care about getting it right.

I have lived with hypoglycemia all my life. I developed an early aversion to the taste of sugar. Self defense I guess. I didn’t get diagnosed until I was 50. Hyper insulinism is another name. Is it indeed a form of diabetes?

That’s awesome!
(as I’ve had that happen before and the lines actually have been switched!)

I’ve had that happen too! That’s awesome that your server was nice 🙂 if I can’t tell if its regular or diet and I don’t want to say anything ill test the drink with my meter! Just put a drop of the coke on a test strip and if if reads a number or HI then it’s regular!

I’m glad you had a good experience after not making a big deal out of it. I’m going to have to check this “Matchbox” out the next time that I’m down in your ‘hood.
