We, The Undersigned, hearby declare to take a break every now and then.
It’s entirely likely that this petition will only be signed by one person – me – but hear me out. All of this social media stuff? It’s easy to get lost in the shenanigans. It’s easy to become preoccupied in maintaining too many Tumblrs. It’s far too easy to get lost participating in, or merely lurking on, Twitter conversations. Odin knows I could spend hours tweaking the look of this blog and I don’t even maintain the CSS files. Imagine the rabbit hole I could fall into if I had that kind of control.
Sometimes it’s more important to step outside and take a deep breath. Take a walk. Plant some peas. Play with your pets (or kids, if they’re mobile).
Do something else. Do something.
I have difficulties remembering this. I have difficulties remembering that being part of a community is important, but it’s not the only thing worth focusing on each and every day. Sometimes “going dark” is the best protocol. Conversations will happen without you, sure, but the good thing about the Internet is that this stuff isn’t going away. And it’s easy to get caught up if you know where to look.
Heretofor I append my signature to the bottom of the petition, lorem ipsum ipso facto veni vedi vici, and will do my best to not be around as much. I’m not going away, but more frequent breaks might do us all some good.
This post was inspired by Diabetes Blog Week 2013. Be sure to check out all of the other great posts from the diabetes community. It’s awesome.
You are so right! It’s all too easy to stay stuck in our office, glued to the screen.
