Think Van Gogh, But Without the Ear ‘Incident’

July 14, 2009

My parents have been on a kick to repaint the walls in the family room for what feels like months. We have had a decent shade of blue along most of the walls and it covers the main wall along the family room and the kitchen. Of course the undertaking of such a monumental task of painting the walls in the biggest room in the house is not one to be taken lightly. Pictures will show off better than I can describe what went down this weekend, so read on but be sure to dress appropriately, it might get messy.

Btw, all of these pictures link to the full set on Flickr.

About a month ago my mom took the plunge and decided on a shade of green and yellow to try out in a few choice areas for comparison. After frequent discussion and deliberation on the two colors, yellow was nominated as the winner. Then it came down to which shade of yellow. Of course at a glance…it’s freakin yellow, but it’s never that simple, is it?

Finally a shade of yellow was selected, don’t ask me which one, and the rest of the supplies were procured. Rollers, an uber extender for said roller and a couple brushes for the edging. Before they went out to buy everything else they needed I heavily endorsed the use of painters tape. The last time we painted in the family room, no tape was used and you could tell. Honestly, it screams of lazy, but since these are my parents we’re talking about we’ll just call it a lower priority. I took charge of the taping of edges and frames this time around and also took over covering what furniture we couldn’t move out with plastic. I’m a freak about things I believe I can control, it’s a character flaw.

Motion Blur ftw...

Motion Blur ftw...

Day 1 didn’t start until after lunch so the small wall and part of the far wall (as indicated in pictures) were tackled. Day two involved the almighty ceiling. I had learned that we had never painted the ceiling in the 15ish years we had lived at this house. Once my dad started to use the ‘Ultra Fine White’ paint, you can really tell the difference. It was quite shocking. In a good way, but shocking. Day two ended with the ceiling completed, and probably 80% of yellow applied.

Before the battle...

Before the battle...

I believe that the rest of the main yellow and final edging of the floor border will be completed in the next 24-48 hours as time permits.

Seriously, the room feels completely different. I think the actual whiteness of the ceiling makes all the difference. The yellow is nice, but the clean ceiling paint makes the whole room brighter. Even in the middle of the night.

The Aftermath...

The Aftermath...

Of course now the new task is new wallpaper for the kitchen…

Expect an update in a couple of months…hopefully ;)

LOL… my Other Half is the same way with color. OTOH, my dad used to match colors for a living; I grew up trained to colors the way musical families train their children to perfect pitch. Now, I can’t tell you colors by RGB, CMYK, or HSB percentages… but given good (full-spectrum) lighting, I’ve been known to match colors blind.

    Looks AWEsome!! ;-)

And about this: “I’m a freak about things I believe I can control, it’s a character flaw.”

No. NOT a character flaw. I am the same way. ANYthing I can “control” or *think* I can control, I will. For me, I relate it to the fact that I feel “out” of control over my body most of the time due to my T1. So anything I can grab onto and *feel* like I have control over it, I will. I hold on tight. Not a flaw at all. No way. It just is.

So ummm … when do you want to come vacation in Ohio? Because SWEET LORD, I could sure use some help with the 432874328437 projects around here … but you’d have to keep the perfectionism to a minimum because there can only be so many divas in this house, and between me and the cats, it’s pretty full up on control issues. ;)

Ooohhh, I love it!!! The former owners of my house never felt the need to tape before they painted. I hate all of the paint spots on the beautiful woodwork. Some day I’ll work up the ambition to CAREFULLY scrape them all clean.

Such a sad end to such a brilliant painter, enjoyed reading your post.
